Understanding Pressure Washers Pressure Levels

Pressure level is one of the most important specification of any pressure washer — be it a high pressure power washer or a low flow pressure washer. The pressure level, usually expressed in pounds per inch (psi), is the most obvious indicator of the cleaning power for a machine. The higher the pressure, the better the cleaning efficiency of the machine. In today’s market, one can find high power washers with pressure levels ranging from a modest 700 psi to a whopping 7000 psi.

Simple logic suggests that the best high pressure power washer is the one with maximum pressure level rating. So, high power washers with a pressure level of 7000 psi would seem to be the best options. However, it is not as simple as it sounds. One has to consider other factors as well when selecting high pressure washers.

The most important factor is the quality and nature of the surface. If a surface cannot withstand the high pressure of the cleaning device, opt for a device with a low psi.. For delicate surfaces, pressure level should not exceed 1000 psi. For hard wood surfaces like decks, the pressure level should be set less than 1500 psi. One can increase the pressure level of high pressure washers as the hardness of the surface increases. Auto detailing applications require a maximum pressure level of 2000 psi, as higher pressure levels can damage the paint of the vehicle. Pressure levels over 5000 psi should be set only for heavy duty industrial cleaning applications.

Another aspect to consider is the flow rate of the machine, which is expressed in gallons per minute. Normally, the flow rate increases as the pressure level increases. In some cases, the flow rate should be restricted to prevent wasting water. Excess water can also damage delicate surfaces like automobiles. This is why mobile auto detailing pressure washing machines feature flow rates as low as 0.5 GPM with moderate pressure levels for effective, safe cleaning.

To ensure the proper cleaning power for your applications without damaging surfaces, speak with a product specialist at a trusted supplier.
